Skills Essential for HR Officers and Executives

 
 

Following are the generic skills required in HR personnel in addition to specific functional skill set of HR department, these skills has been divided into different categories. By Mandatory skills we means those skills which are the key skills for being an HR personnel. Value addition skills are those skills through which a person can add value to his work and organization. Self- development skills are also very important because in Nayatel we truly believe that people can perform well and enjoy their work if we keep own working on their self-development, but it’s a fact that an organization can’t force an employee for self-development until or unless person has a built in passion to grow. By seniority skills we mean those skills which are expected from HR an personnel who has the potential to grow as a key resource of HR department.

Mandatory Skills for HR Personnel:

HR personnel working in Nayatel’s HR department must have:

  1. Strong follow-up skills

  2. Must be extrovert and team player

  3. Expressive, because expressing is everything.

  4. Demonstrate ethical behavior: “Know the right things to do and doing it”.

  5. HR personnel must be able to establish relationships throughout the organization and maintain those relationships

  6. Ability to build a network of relationships with other organizations and prospective employees.

  7. Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills; good writing skills; good sense of humor.

  8. As HR deals with sensitive information concerning compensation and benefits, employee performance and productivity, performance appraisals, problems at work, conflicts, hiring and firing issues etc. Thus, maintaining confidentiality, integrity and extreme discretion are absolutely mandatory.

  9. Able to give and receive feedback constructively.

  10. Can create consensus among peers.

  11. Able to act as flexible while maintaining key principles.

  12. HR personnel must be a good judge of character; tact; confidence.

  13. Personnel must be self-starter, self-motivated, self-controlled and emotionally strong.

  14. Able to dig out potential employees through different types of interviews and meetings: formal & informal meetings, informational seeking, screening, behavioral and based, structured and unstructured interviews

  15. Must have questioning (counter questioning too) and active listening skills.

  1. Personnel must ensure employees are aware of policies and the consequences of violating them.

  2. Must be computer proficient & have effective presentation skills.

Value Addition Skills:

Following skills are required:

  1. HR personnel must be willing and able to add value not only to his own assigned tasks but other too.

  2. Must be a talent manager.

  3. Able to add value through people development.

  4. Must have knowledge about business & industry.

  5. Must have stress management and persuasion skills.

Self-Development Skills:

Following self  development skills are required for HR personnel:

  1. Must have the passion to strive for new skills, knowledge, experience and personal development.

  2. Must have more effective communication and influencing skills.

  3. He must be a book reader (HBR articles).

Computer Proficiency:

Must be good at:

  1. MS-Word

  2. MS-Excel

  3. MS-Outlook

  4. MS-PowerPoint

  5. In Page Urdu

  6. MS-Visio (optional)

  7. HRMS, CRM & e-CRM

Seniority Skills:

Being senior personnel in HR department, company expects following skills:

  1. Must be able to lead a team.

  2. Must have the ability to lead and develop HR team.

  3. He/she must demonstrate; teach; tutor; mentor his peers/subordinates.

  4. Provide psychological support to teams members.

  5. Must understand organization's future knowledge needs.

  6. Must be able to help management to mold employees, to effectively achieve strategic goals of organization.

  7. Must create those practices that make employees more competitive, not more comfortable.

  8. He/she must understand the way people feel, beyond what they seem to be saying.

  9. Must be able to read people accurately and hear what they are “really” saying

  10. Can explain the role of an investigation within company policy framework.

  11. Understand procedural fairness.

  12. Identify conflicts of interest from the beginning.

  13. Must be able to manage behaviors that hold you back from optimal performance.

  1. Understand the key strategies for building and maintaining energy levels at work.

  2. Must have the knowledge to differentiate between management and leadership and when and how to use each.

  3. Must be able to plan, prioritize and manage tasks.

  4. Must have strategic and analytical thinking capability.\

HR Functional Skill Set

Assistant HR Executive:

  • MBA (HRM/Management) from HEC recognized university
  • Proficient in basic MS-Word & MS-Excel
  • Typing Speed: 25WPM (English)
  • Knowledge of filling, tagging and organizing documents/files
  • Knowhow of company’s main policies related to employees

HR Executive:

  • Proficient in MS-Visio & Inpage Urdu in addition to MS-Word & MS-Excel
  • Typing Speed: 30WPM (English), 20WPM (Urdu)
  • Good working knowledge about his working area
  • Must have read (01) book from available books in library and presented any one of them
  • Complete grip on HRMS
  • Knowledge of filling, tagging and organizing documents/files
  • Knowhow of company’s main policies related to employees
  • Regular department visits to meet employees followed by minutes.

Senior HR Executive:

  • All of above in addition to below.
  • Proficient in MS-Excel
  • Atleast one job rotation
  • 01 departmental presentation on any topic
  • Must have read (02) books/article from available books/HBRs in library and presented any one of them

Regular department visits to meet employees followed by minutes.

Corporate HR Executive:

  • All of above in addition to below.
  • Proficient in MS-Visio & Inpage, MS-Word & MS-Excel
  • Supervision of 1-2 employee(s)
  • Minimum one job rotation
  • Back up of any other HR function
  • 02 departmental presentation on any topic
  • Proficiency in hiring and promotion interviews
  • Must have read (02) books/article from available books/HBRs in library
  • Fair knowhow of labor laws, EOBI, legal aspects of provident fund etc.
  • Regular department visits to meet employees followed by minutes.
